1. Who is the protagonist? What is their want or desire? What are some character traits that are important to note about this protagonist?
-The story has no specific protagonist. The Story is about how planet earth is in danger of being destroyed by an oncoming star. So the protagonist would have to be the earth itself. The planet of Earth wants to survive the oncoming star. The people of planet earth are all terrified about what might happen to their planet if the star either gets to close or crashes with them. Throughout the story, Wells has a few random pedestrians yell out to the sky of what they see approaching them and shows how scared they are becoming.
2. Is there an antagonist? If so, what are they trying to stop the protagonist from achieving and why? If there is not an antagonist, what is the conflict for the protagonist and what force is stopping them?
-The antagonist is the oncoming star. The star is threatening the whole solar system and the planet of earth. As it approaches it destroys many of the planets and moons in its way. As the star continues to get closer, astrologists and mathematicians predict that it will either crash into the earth or pass by them enough to let their planet survive.
3. What is the theme of the story? Which techniques are used in order to develop the message within this story?
-The theme of the story in my opinion is to appreciate what you have before it's gone. I think another theme of this story is unity. When planet earth found out about the oncoming star they had to band together and figure out a way to survive together if it doesn't collide with them.
4. What is the author’s tone within the story? Which techniques help develop the author’s voice?
-The authors tone within the story is a very serious one. He doesn't write as if he were in someone else shoes. Wells shows the dialogue of random pedestrians of various cities of earth who are watching this star come closer and closer. He captures their fear as they notice the star become brighter and larger.
5. What is the crisis action in this story? Does the protagonist achieve in getting what they want? What to they realize and how do they change?
-The crisis action of the story is the near destruction of Earth when a star was about to collide with them. The protagonist, Earth, achieves salvation in the end when the star misses them enough to allow the inhabitants to live. The world changes in that they have to learn to put aside any differences and adapt to their new surroundings in the poles of Earth. The people were able to save as much as they can to preserve the history of their people before the star could pass by and destroy what it can.
6. What did you enjoy about this story?
-What I enjoyed about this story was how realistic it was as well as practical. I liked how Wells made the events taken place in the story seem as if it would really happen if another start would come into our solar system. In the end when the star passed by them, many countries were destroyed as well as people. The people who survived could no longer live in their home so everyone had to migrate to the poles where the temperature was more appropriate for living.
"It is brighter!" cried the people clustering in the streets. But in the dim observatories the watchers held their breath and peered at one another IT IS NEARER," they said. "NEARER!"
I love how frantic Wells made the people of Earth. This story reminds me of the movie Another Earth which has the same concept of something coming near but instead it was an exact copy of Earth.
