1. Who is the protagonist? What is their want or desire? What are some character traits that are important to note about this protagonist?
The protagonist is Nunez, a man who gets lost in a hidden mountain in Ecuador. Nunez wants many things such as finding his way back home, proving to the Blind people that there is such a thing as sight and winning Medina-saroté from the elders so that he may marry her. Nunez wants power over the blind people but fails because no one in that village knows anything about sight since everyone was born blind. Nunez also has a soft side for Medina-saroté and is willing to have his eyes gouged out in order to be with her.
2. Is there an antagonist? If so, what are they trying to stop the protagonist from achieving and why? If there is not an antagonist, what is the conflict for the protagonist and what force is stopping them?
The antagonist of the story is the people of the blind village. Another form of an antagonist is where the village is located. The village is so well hidden and impossible to escape that it has trapped Nunez in what seems to be forever until a rock slide threatens to destroy the village until he grabs Medina-saroté and runs away with her.
3. What is the theme of the story? Which techniques are used in order to develop the message within this story?
The theme of the story is that we don't need everything to be happy. The people in the village don't have sight and are capable of living without it. When Nunez comes to the town and tries to convince them of a thing such as sight they shoot him down because it is considered nonsense to them. When Nunez tries to rule the town because he is the only one with sight he realizes he can't because he is a minority in town and his sight is worth nothing to them. Another theme in this story is love and how people will do anything for the people they care about the most.
4. What is the author’s tone within the story? Which techniques help develop the author’s voice?
The authors tone throughout the story is sad. The whole story is a sad story with little happiness. The main character gets lost with no way out in a strange land filled with blind people. When he tries to convince them that he can see with refuse to believe him. When he finds love the people of the village won't allow him to marry her until his eyes are gouged out. When he finally feels like he belongs in this village, a rock slide comes and destroys most of it.
5. What is the crisis action in this story? Does the protagonist achieve in getting what they want? What to they realize and how do they change?
The crisis action of the story is that Nunez accidentally finds himself to a village of blind people who don't believe that he can see. The people of this village are all diseased with blindness which was given to them when they were born. Nunez tries to find a way out of this village but fails until the end when he escapes it. While he is living in the village, everyone calls him crazy because he keeps trying to convince him that there is such a thing as a 5th sense for sight. Throughout the story, Nunez changes when he wants to settle down and marry Medina-saroté as well as agree to have his eyes plucked out so that he too can be blind like his beloved. Before he can have his eyes taken out, he notices another rock slide to destroy this village and when he tries to convince everyone that something bad will happen, they ignore him. Therefore he takes Medina-saroté and runs away from the valley where the rock slide will hit saving both of their lives.
6. What did you enjoy about this story?
What I enjoyed about this story is how Nunez tries so hard to find an escape or rule the whole village until he meets Medina-saroté and changes his mind altogether. I like how this story shows that love will make anyone do crazy things.
"To-morrow," he said, "I shall see no more."
"Dear heart!" she answered, and pressed his hands with all her strength.
"They will hurt you but little," she said; "and you are going through this pain, you are going through it, dear lover, for ME . . . . Dear, if a woman's heart and life can do it, I will repay you. My dearest one, my dearest with the tender voice, I will repay."
Another thing I liked about this story is how the people in the village are not struggling to live without their sight and how they adjusted their town to their needs. I think this story really shows how people can be very happy with what they got and even when people try to tell them otherwise they remain strong.
