Under the Knife

Title of Short Story: Under the Knife

Author:HG Wells

1. Who is the protagonist? What is their want or desire? What are some character traits that are important to note about this protagonist?
The protagonist is a man whose name is unknown. He is about to undergo surgery and before the operation he fears that he might die on the table. His wants and desires are that he wants to survive the operation. Some character traits to be aware of is that he is very paranoid and constantly thinks of death and resurrection.

2. Is there an antagonist? If so, what are they trying to stop the protagonist from achieving and why? If there is not an antagonist, what is the conflict for the protagonist and what force is stopping them?
The antagonist of the story is the protagonists mind. His mind constantly forces him to think of his death and the doctor who will operate to kill him while he is under. The narrators mind stops him from thinking positively therefore he has constant nightmares of his death.

3. What is the theme of the story? Which techniques are used in order to develop the message within this story?
The theme of the story is death and reaching enlightenment. The author uses the chloroform not working on the narrator who him to leave his body and feel everything that is happening while he is being operated on as well as to look onto his doctors minds. He faces a near death experience which leads him to get rid of all pain and sadness and become at peace with himself.

4. What is the author’s tone within the story? Which techniques help develop the author’s voice?
The authors tone throughout the story is very psychotic sounding at times. He gets into the mind of the narrator and makes him sound subtly crazy but not obviously so. Wells does great transitions through the narrators mindset throughout the story. He goes from paranoid to crazy and back to paranoid then blissful.

5. What is the crisis action in this story? Does the protagonist achieve in getting what they want? What to they realize and how do they change?
The crisis action of the story is when the narrators dreams come true while he has his surgery and he goes through a near death experience when the doctor nicked a vein. The protagonist in the end gets what he wants and has a successful surgery even though the doctor almost killed him. In the end he is relieved of his pain and he no longer feels sad or paranoid but happy with himself and even at peace with himself that he lived and that he has so much more to live for as well.

6. What did you enjoy about this story?
-What  i enjoyed about this story is how paranoid the narrator is and how his greatest fears come to life while he is on the table and the chloroform doesn't  work. I like how Wells told the story and how he made this day the narrators worst nightmare come to life as well as granted him a new mindset and made it into the best day all at the same time.
And then a voice, which seemed to run to the uttermost parts of space, spoke, saying, "There will be no more pain."At that an almost intolerable gladness and radiance rushed in upon me, and I saw the circle shining white and bright, and the rod black and shining, and many things else distinct and clear.
I really liked this quote because it shows how the narrator reaching this new state of mind..
